ICYMI: Detroit Free Press: Melissa Gilbert to Pay Off Back Taxes by 2024

Gilbert Asks for 20 Years to Pay Her Taxes; Gilbert Wants One Rule For Taxpayers, Another Rule for Hollywood Elitists

Excerpts from Article by Todd Spangler, Detroit Free Press, August 11, 2014

“Actress Melissa Gilbert, the “Little House on the Prairie” star who this week announced her candidacy for a Michigan congressional seat next year, expects to pay off more than $470,000 in federal and state tax liens by 2024, her campaign told the Free Press on Tuesday.”

“The tax liens against Gilbert, first reported in June by the Detroit News, are certain to raise questions for the former television star, who most notably portrayed Laura Ingalls Wilder on NBC’s “Little House on the Prairie” in the 1970s and ‘80s, as she begins her first-ever political campaign.”

“Bishop’s campaign has already put out statements questioning the tax liens against Gilbert and saying her values are “out of whack with” a district that has been consistently Republican in recent years and elected Bishop with 54% of the vote in 2014.”

“Considering Rogers won even as President Barack Obama took the district in 2008, Gilbert’s path will likely be difficult.”

“But the tax bill — and the specifics that led to it — could continue to dog her. Legal records show a federal tax lien of $127,752 filed against her and then-husband Bruce Boxleitner in Los Angeles County as long ago as 2005, with several more filed in recent years.”

“Her campaign said today she owes $360,551 on a federal tax lien filed earlier this year in Livingston County, where she and her husband, actor and director Timothy Busfield, have lived since 2013. Gilbert also owes $112,527 on tax lien from California.”
